The Bahamas is an island paradise in the Atlantic Ocean located southeast of the United States. Geographically it belongs to Central America.   • First settlement attempts as early as the 4th century.
  • Permanently settled since the 9th / 10th century.

  • Late 17th/early 18th century shelter for pirates like Blackbeard.
  • 1964 right of self-government.
  • Declared independent in 1973.
